It’s never too late to start working out. In fact, a recent study conducted by Life Fitness found that people over 65 years of age are more likely to exercise daily than any other age group. That’s likely due to the fact that physical activity eliminates joint aches and pains, improves balance and flexibility, and minimizes chances of falling.

If you’re 65 or older and looking to get moving, the place to go is your local gym. With the clearance from your personal physician, the ultimate goal should be to find a facility or program that is welcoming, enjoyable and accommodating to your personal needs.  Here are some tips from the exercise experts at Fitness Town and Life Fitness:

Work within your physical limitations: Ask questions and find out what type of programs meet your fitness level. If you are just beginning, try walking on the treadmill at a speed of three miles per hour and work up to 30 minutes. Every week, gradually increase the speed of the treadmill. For an extra boost try increasing the incline. Just be sure to take it easy and listen to your body as you venture into new activities.  Always ask the instructor/trainer for modifications if needed. They are there to help you get the safest, most effective workout.

Overcome the “muscle” mental block: Muscle knows no age. You are never too old to do strength training. Strength training can quickly improve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Muscle is also the key to metabolism and can help control weight, and improve energy, balance and self confidence.

A great way to get started in strength training is to use machines that utilize resistant band technology. These types of equipment offer lower joint impact, push-button weight settings, and ergonomically sound seating and grips to fit a multitude of body sizes and shapes. So, no matter what the age or exercise level, you can achieve your goals of better physical health and fitness in an easy to use, safe environment. Grab a group of friends and circuit train together to add some social interaction. Or start with a trainer that can help ease you into an exercise routine and modify movements for you on a personal level.
