Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to set up your own fitness area. Now what? The planning stage can be quite overwhelming. Following these ten steps will help make your planning go smooth.

1.    Set a budget. This is a simple but necessary step. Without setting a budget you may lose focus on what you really want out of your home gym. Make sure your budget is realistic and keep calculate for flooring, delivery or other additional fees.

2.    What type of home gym do you want? Cardio, Strength, open surface or a combination?

3.   Choose a room. Ground level or basement rooms are the best choice. If you only have space upstairs, make sure the room you choose is not above a bedroom or social room since the noise of running on a treadmill or putting weights down may get quite irritating to the people below you. Using your garage is okay as long as you have easy access to it and it is heated. If it is always cold during the winter or it is too cumbersome to get to it you will be less inclined to use it as often.

4.    Measure your room. Know how much space you have available so you don’t end up over cluttering the area. Try to allow for easy access to every machine.

5.    Choose the equipment you want. This can be a difficult decision. Treadmill or elliptical? Upright bike or recumbent bike? Spin bike or rower? Free weights or all in one gym? Power-cage or functional trainer? There are a few things you can do to help with these choices. If you used to work out at a gym, think about which pieces of equipment you enjoy using. Then take a trip down to your nearest FitnessTown location to scope out all the different types of equipment and consult with one of the equipment experts. Make sure to keep an open mind. Don’t just look at what you already know. Ask about any new or different equipment that you haven’t used before.

6.    Once you know what types of equipment you want, make a priority list. Jot down which pieces you need to have right away and which pieces could be added later if you run into a budget crunch.

7.    Choose your equipment. Go visit your nearest FitnessTown to find the right pieces of equipment. When making this decision, keep in mind that you are better off buying fewer better quality machines than many lower quality ones. If you invest in good equipment, you will enjoy using it a lot more and will get more out of your home gym. You are also less likely to have service problems if you chose superior equipment. You can always add more equipment later.

8.   Choose accessories. If you have carpet in your gym room, you will require mats for underneath cardio machines. Free weights as well as some weight stack machines will require thick rubber flooring. An extra mat, a medicine ball and a swiss ball can offer you a lot of variety. Take a look around your FitnessTown location and ask your consultant which little items could make your home gym better.

9.    Decide whether you require your new equipment to be delivered and assembled for you. Most Fitness equipment (at least the good quality stuff) is very heavy, often large and usually quite complicated to assemble. Consider having all this taken care of by the pros.

10.    Prep your room for the arrival of your new equipment and create a layout of where you want which piece of equipment.

Don’t get discouraged it you can’t get everything you wanted at first. Creating your own home fitness area can be an ongoing, passion filled project. Especially with all the new equipment and new training techniques that are continuously being developed.
