Hit a plateau? Change it up.

Bodybuilding 101, CrossFit, High Intesitity Training, Circuit Traing, Yoga, Pilates, Cardio, Sport Specific Training, Plyometrics, Body Weigfht, TRX, P90x, Insanity and Zumba - the list of different workout options and routines goes on, and on. To be honest, they are all good methods of training and the results they promise can be achieved through all of them.  So which one is the best, and which one is right for you?

Despite their differences, they all tend to promise that this is only training you will ever need! “Do this 3 times, 5 times; 6 times a week and you will build muscle fast and shred fat!" Sound familiar?

The question I have is, how do all these methods of training achieve the same, or similar results, yet they are so far apart in ideology and practice? The key is to understand fitness as a whole, and realizing the differences between the types of workout programs. Determine the fitness goals and results you want to achieve, and best match those to the type of training programs that supports your goals. If it's not the right fit today, that doesn't mean it won't the right fit down the road - keep your mind open to the new and old.

Although “Find what works for you and stick with it!” - sounds like good advice. Because if it ain't broke don’t fix it, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, this mentality sets up most people for not necessarily failure, but plateau. A plateau occurs when you are consistently putting the time and effort but not seeing, or achieving results.

You may be listening to everything that Arnold, Greg Glassman, Dr. Oz or Oprah have said, while reading Men's or Women's Health from cover to cover but are still not achieving the results they promise. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to put any off these methods down like I said at the beginning they are all great forms of fitness and health. What I’m trying to say is don’t drink the Kool-Aid, always be learning and willing to try something new with your fitness routine. Maybe you are a hard core CrossFitter and you have done every W.O.D under the sun. Maybe it's time for a change? Put yourself through a body building style workout, then come see me the next day and let me know how you feel! Same goes for a bodybuilder trying CrossFit, or any other form of high-intensity exercise, a new workout will shock your system.

Open your mind to different ideas and forms of fitness, incorporate them into your routine and break through those plateaus

Ask yourself or better yet ask your workout routine “What have you done for me lately?” if the answer is anything less than when you started it, maybe it’s time to change it up!
