Crossfit — the best workout ever!

Lots of postings on the Fitness Town blog talking about the esteemed “300” workout.  Well you may or may not know but the roots of the “300” workout lie in Crossfit.  I started crossfit training 2 weeks ago and I can honestly say that it has been some of the most intense workouts I have ever personally experienced.  Here is an exert from the Crossfit.ca website explaining what is crossfit:

“CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. It is also being implemented in nursing homes with the elderly…..if you fit somewhere in between it can probably help you.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our soldiers, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.

Crossfit was developed in Santa Cruz California by Greg Glassman in the Late 90’s. Greg’s mission was to develop a CODE for FITNESS via Clinical trial, i.e. measuring inputs and outputs. Much like the LINUX operating system was created out of a gift culture and is free for anyone to download, Crossfit is open source, there are no franchising fees, no gimics to sell and anyone can access this “code” via http://www.crossfit.com.

The Crossfit Community has taken what works best and eliminates what doesn’t, if an exercise provides superior results it stays in the program, if not it is banished to the scrap heap. CrossFit is what remains – bar none, the most effective fitness program created to date. Through years of ongoing clinical trial (20,000 people a day do Crossfit now) this quest has developed into a fitness movement that is spreading rapidly around the world. From the “average Joe/Jane” to the military, police, professional and amatur athletes Crossfit is delivering results like no other fitness program before it.

The Code for Fitness is essentially uncomplicated and comprises three elements

1) Functional Movements
2) Intensity
3) Variance

If you are looking for a great workout to push your limits, then look no further than crossfit.

Happy training!
