Whether you walk or run on a treadmill, take a stroll in the park, go for a hike or take the stairs at work, this all counts towards your daily step count. The point is to 'always keep moving' and step counting is a great place to start. Learn the basics of step counting here.

Daily Step Count Basics - Is 10,000 The Magic Number?

If you buy a smart pedometer or fitness tracker like a Polar Fitness Tracker or a Fitbit, chances are the device will encourage you to take 10,000 steps a day. But do you really have to walk this much to be healthy?
Experts say that while 10,000 steps a day is a good number to reach, any amount of activity beyond what you're currently doing will likely benefit your health. Studies have found that women who increased their step count to nearly 10,000 steps a day reduced their blood pressure after 24 weeks. Another study of overweight women found that walking 10,000 steps a day improved their glucose levels. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the US recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as a brisk walk. This translates to 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day.

Building Your Numbers

If you are new to step counting and serious about improving your fitness, we recommend purchasing a pedometer or fitness tracker. The Polar A370 Fitness Tracker is a great option. You can also use the fitness trackers on your Smartphone; many of which come with built in fitness trackers. Or check out the Google App Store or Apple App Store to download smartphone apps that suit your needs.

If you don’t have a history of walking or moderate exercise, we recommend setting short term goals. For instance, for a week or two, aim for 5,000 steps a day. Remember all steps that you take throughout the day count. So whether you are doing housework, walking to the mailbox, or running around a track at the gym, it all counts. As your physical fitness builds, increase your step goal every week or two until you’ve reached the 10,000 step mark.

If you find yourself stuck indoors due to a winter storm or other mobility issues, consider purchasing a treadmill for your home. Fitness Town has many great treadmill options for all fitness levels, goals and budgets.
